Mexico Surf Adventure

Turning our attention to a nice area that was one of those secret surfing spots at one time…in the days before cell phones, laptops, and the internet…real adventure with banditos and a gringo from Texas trying to recruit us to retrieve his boss’s gold mining equipment from other banditos…but, that’s another story…let’s get to the surfing part…;-)

Flying over ancient ruins…usually a bumpy ride over the mountains from Mexico City…

Mexico’s version of Big Sur…

The surf just pumped non-stop on this trip at this point with glassy conditions and virtually void of other surfers…felt like a pig in mud…not the case today, unfortunately…;-)

The waves in Puerto Escondido don’t have to be board and neck snapping beach break barrels to have fun…nowadays, surfers on those out of control days are being towed in…but, it’s still a challenging and dangerous wave even below double overhead…

We’re taking the liberty to redefine the last couple of weeks flat spell as the subject line suggests, leading up to today’s total flatness of surf…winter is going out like a lamb with 10 days officially left…

The good news is that the Southern Hemisphere is starting to come to life…hopefully, that means warmer water and playful swells…

I remember jumping on a plane to go to the “Mexican Pipeline”…Puerto Escondido’s Playa Zicatela…chasing an early Southern Hemisphere swell during one of these flat spells, to be met by some incredibly hard breaking, board and neck snapping beach break barrels…careful what you ask for…;-)

The shop gets so busy sometimes that you almost forget that you have a personal life…you wake up one day and it’s almost your anniversary and you haven’t even started shopping…what to do?…hmmmmmm…I know…let’s kick start Summer by adventuring in the desert by the ocean…south swells, hot sun, cool drinks, and warm water…let’s run for the border!!!

Here’s a couple of new vid clips forwarded to me by my amigo Kevin…they really capture the wonderful atmosphere of Punta Sayulita and the 2nd Annual Punta Sayulita Longboard & Stand-Up Paddle Classic…

The 2nd Annual Punta Sayulita Classic took place on March 11 -13, 2011 in beautiful Sayulita, Mexico, featuring some of the top international longboard and SUP surfers and paddlers in the world. However, the competition is secondary to the fact that all proceeds raised from the Punta Sayulita Classic are donated to the Reef Check and Punta Sayulita Foundations. This year’s Classic also featured a free benefit concert performed by international reggae recording artist, Mishka. The Punta Sayulita Classic is produced and organized by the Punta Sayulita development company.

Here’s a few more postcards from paradise…SUP in Mexico…

It was Deb’s B-day…right after Valentine’s day, so I treated her to some pretty posh digs…a 2nd floor master suite near some good paddling and a couple of nearby surf spots…she deserves it after some of the places we’ve stayed in over the last 30 years of mainland Mexico trekking…;-)
