Lake Cachuma SUP

You heard it here first…our behind the scenes work has finally paid off!

The Santa Barbara County Parks Department has announced it will be allowing Stand Up Paddle Boards on Cachuma Lake Recreation Area for a six month trial period beginning Friday September 9, 2011. This trial period comes on the heels of the successful launch of canoes and kayaks back in April of this year. The new uses at the lake were considered to be compatible with current lake activities and an opportunity to expand the recreational experience at Lake Cachuma.

The rules and regulations for Stand Up Paddle Boarding will be the same as for canoes and kayaks and can be found on the Cachuma Lake website at Stand Up Paddle Boards must pass an inspection for Quagga Mussel and other aquatic nuisance species prior to launch. The fee for launching Stand Up Paddle Boards is $5. The Public is reminded that Cachuma Lake is still a non body contact lake and swimming from Boat, Shore, Kayak, Canoe, or Stand Up Paddle Board is still prohibited.

We did a demonstration paddle at a meeting we had with the SB County decision makers back in April that helped convince them that standup paddling was as appropriate on the lake as kayaks and canoes…

Cachuma Lake is surrounded by the beautiful backcountry of the Santa Ynez mountain range…
