Marina Del Rey Race

The SoCal Winter Race Series ended today at Mother’s Beach in Marina Del Rey, CA…
The 5 mile race started in the harbor right outside Mothers Beach and headed outside of the breakwater to the first marker and back to Mother’s Beach…

We don’t have the final point standings in yet…will update when available…
Our paddle racing team is in contention for several “medals”…

We think Ernie (EJ) Johnson won the men’s stock division with a 2nd place finish today…John Becker won’t do worse than 3rd in men’s unlimited…prolly the silver medal here…and Deb Thomas tallied up enough points and race finishes to finish no worse than 3rd in women’s SUP…

Here’s John Becker squeaking by Jim Terrell (QuickBlade) at the finish…definitely, the most exciting moment of the race…

Thomas Gallagher, winner of the Battle of the Paddle Open Class, pulling down a 1st in men’s unlimited…

Jared Vargas was stoked with his 3rd place finish in men’s unlimited…he’s really starting to put some good racing together and will represent a threat for years to come as he matures…

Hobie’s Byron Kurt put together a good race to edge out EJ in men’s stock…

He also did us a favor by bringing up an aqua 11’2″ that’s going out as a surprise b-day gift to Indiana this week…mahalos…

EJ is always a threat…he can beat just about anyone on the planet on the right day…his performance today was enough to guaranty him the 2008/2009 SoCal Winter Race Series gold medal in men’s stock SUP…good job, EJ!

Rich Schroeder returned to the paddle racing scene with a good race, after a hiatus as a basketball coach for his daughter’s team…

Here’s Deb bringing it on home…we’re proud of her for finishing every race and never quitting…despite some downright nasty paddling conditions at times…

Brian Fernandez putting a hurt on the new Powerex SUP paddle…

Our shop manager, John Becker, also used one along with his new carbon BARK unlimited SUP…competing against bigger guys on bigger boards requires that more H20 gets moved…

Finally, a big group hug for the rest of our paddle racing team…the young guns…

Matt Becker…14 years young and he’s keen to the competitive paddle racing and surfing circuit…bright kid with a great support group steering him along…
He’s starting to pick up sponsor interest…but, we put him to work at our shop and his first purchase was a paddle and the BARK paddling vest he is wearing…

UCSB engineering major, Todd Strand, (most improved paddler on our team) sporting some cold weather paddle racing attire…BARK beanie…

Ed Anderson…L@@King quite color coordinated around his BARK paddling vest and black carbon themed ensemble…usually, this is Todd’s domain…;-)

Ed works for his dad at Anderson Custom Boats…he applies engineering and common sense to the boats they build…after a 3 hour long distance converstaion with George Greenough recently…Ed is ready to embark on building his first SUP racing board…
