Dana Ocean Challenge

The Dana Outrigger Canoe Club hosted the 21st Dana Ocean Challenge on Saturday…~ 270 paddlers turned out…with a large contingent of standup paddle racers…and, just like the Redondo race, calm conditions inside the harbor gave way to a washing machine rinse tide outside the Dana Pt. harbor…didn’t see too many dry paddlers…

The race director, Eric Smith, helped facilitate the best start that we’ve seen at this Winter race series…after recalling everyone back…they staggered the field…prone paddlers had a 5 minute head start on the SUP’s…then they let loose the OC-1, OC-2, & Surf Skis…

Rob Rojas smoked the SUP field…impressive race…it was quite awhile between him and the next SUP finisher…it will be interesting to see how his overall time stacked up against the sit down craft…

Here is Rob at the start pulling ahead of Thomas (Maximus) Shahinian…

Local paddler (SUPsports Team) Ernie (EJ) Johnson led the way in stock class, on his 12’6″ NCP…taking out many other paddlers on SUP’s 6′ longer…

EJ heading towards the finish line…

His wife Andie paddled a 14′ NCP into 3rd in the wahine SUP race…

Another exciting race to the finish between our shop manager, John Becker, and Jared Vargas…once again, John kicked it into overdrive on the final stretch towards the finish line for a 4th place point accumulation…

Jared is half John’s age…or John is twice Jared’s age…however you L@@K at it…Jared won the Cold Hand’s race last weekend…so, this “kid” is a contender…

Mark Johnson and the Hobie team were in full force as this is their local watering hole…the new 14′ carbon Hobie was feeling fast and sleek when I paddled it…

We had a corrupt chip that caused us to lose some images…luckily, through some miracle software we were able to recover a portion…

Here are two galleries of images…
